Research Proxies for Communities

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 5:30 PM
This came up in the course of Hippo-ing, so I'll just throw this out as a sign-up post. If the Beta post, the Hippo route, or other avenues of research are not quite what an author needs... sometimes they'll want to post to a journal community.

If you absolutely cannot disguise your fandom and/or Yuletide assignment in a research-based community, here (hopefully) are volunteers who can help you preserve anonymity.

(Here are some resource examples from last year.)

VOLUNTEERS: Please put your Yuletide sign-in name in the subject and any communities where you can proxy-post. Plus other contact and availability information, as with the Beta post. If applicable, remember to pass the link to the author so they can monitor it.

AUTHORS: A quick reminder not to comment directly to the query (at least not till after Reveal). If you are on LJ, you can use the Tracking button track this post and watch your Message Center for notices.

Keep in mind that each community has its rules and procedures. Most of them, including [info]little_details, require that you've made a good faith effort to find answers on your own.

Thank you!!

Lulzy, completely SFW (boo!) video under the cut. )

Also, here are some ~delicious~ quotes from a recent Levi article: )
- - - - -

Second source has another video of the ~eloquent, historic award speech~. And also has this gem of a quote:

The photo spread, a tribute to "hockey moms," [LMAO] features the 19-year old posing with a hockey stick.

(...but probably the most hilarious thing of all is that Palin tells ~Oprah~ that she might be open to inviting Levi over for Thanksgiving. Have Tank taste all your food before you eat anything, Levi!)

P.S. ~~~"A lot of famous people have done Playgirl: Jim Brown, Burt Reynolds, Mario Lopez."~~~

Kadotery items

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 6:19 PM
So, I've noticed that apparently no one owns a single Happy Anniversary Negg or Snow Kabobs.

And this made me think, do any of you guys have either of these? If you do, are they worth more to keep rather than to feed to a kadoatie? You can't find these things ANYWHERE at all.

If you have either of them, how in the heck did you get it anyway? :P

You know, I'm not quite sure how you'd phrase it, but I think you need to warn in some way for the main character of a series eating one of the other characters (the one who most of the fandom, you included, ship him with) alive. Even if it's just a nightmare. I'd say warning for cannibalism might give the right impression even though it's not strictly correct.

Especially since it was marked as a humour story and the previous nightmares had been light, funny, and mostly standard Mpreg shorts.

Also, Smallville fandom, how is it possible that over half of all your rec links are broken? Is Google just giving me really old results? Has the fandom been dead for years (it doesn't seem to be)? It's not just the links leading to smallville.slashdom.com, either, because I've figure out how to fix that. Oh no. I've never seen such a wide array of 404 errors, domain-name-for-sale pages, and random apparently unrelated Japanese websites.

Pet Names =/= Trashy

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 6:08 PM
If you want to list the reasons why X would never call his lover honey/sweetie/babe/baby/dearest/lover, go for it. On most characters, you're probably 100% right. And if you want to explain why a certain pet name really rubs you the wrong way personally and how you would disembowel anyone who ever considered using it on you, go for it.

However, reasonable, rational, sane people use pet names. It may be joking, it may be completely serious, but pet names like honey, baby, sugar, sweetie, kitten, lover, etc come up in fan fic because they are used in real life. It's entirely possible for an educated, enlightened, nonsexist person to call a significant other by a pet name (or vice versa) and it's entirely possible for an educated, enlightened S.O. to actually like being called by a pet name (or, again, vice versa).

So, while it's okay to rant about how you don't like a certain pet name and how a certain character would never use that pet name, please refrain from making judgement calls about people who actually use those names.

On CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, White House senior adviser David Axelrod responded to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's criticism of the president. Romney expressed incredulity that President Obama had not made up his mind on Afghanistan.

"Why is it taking so long?" host John King asked.

"Governor Romney has to choose one argument of another," Axelrod responded. "Either he has to say he is not paying attention or he has to say he is taking too long because he has been involved in a rigorous review ... You know, I know that Governor Romney has never had responsibility for any decision akin to this, so he just may not be familiar with all that it entails."

Texas faith in the death penalty shaken?

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Texas accounts for half of executions in US but now has doubts over death row
Overturned convictions and growth of DNA forensic evidence shake state's rock-solid faith in capital punishment

by Chris McGreal, The Guardian

Even in Texas they are having their doubts. The state that executes more people than any other by far – it will account for half the prisoners sent to the death chamber in the US this year – is seeing its once rock-solid faith in capital punishment shaken by overturned convictions, judicial scandals and growing evidence that at least one innocent man has been executed.

Hello all! I'm doing National Novel Writing Month, and I have a question for my project. Let's just say that someone's house was haunted, and it was freaking that person out. If that person wanted to get rid of the ghost or to quiet it down, what advice would you give them?
