...I originally read it as they would be similarly boggled as my classmate [at a "female god"] and was slightly horrified that you didn't remember much, because in situations like that, where I have to be polite, I try to remember as much about the reasoning as possible for future use. But I am glad I am not crazy.
We had a class discussing Earth First! last Thursday, and everyone was insisting that they were a cult too. I don't particularly agree with some of their methods, but the readings made it sound like they were sneaking into people's houses and blowing up their cats and toilets or something, not destroying logging equipment, and after I pointed out that according to the very same reading, they had become a lot less extreme, members held a wide variety of views, and were no longer particularly apocalyptic, That Guy decided it was totally a cult anyway, "because, like, Wicca is social justicey too and that's a cult!"
I suppose I must just have a soft spot for extremely eccentric groups that are explicitly environmentalist or feminist, and therefore I must present a really easy target for That Guy. I think he just likes to be obnoxious, and I can relate to that.
(Also, only semi-relatedly, I really wish we could be assigned ecofeminist readings that were not gender essentialist and did not assign science and math to the Bad Evil Male side of things. That is not my environmentalism! That is not my feminism! But obviously it's somebody's, and it's prominent, so I should know about it.)
